I worked for a major Canadian university and my boss was a total scam artist. I was hired along with 2 other people and by the time I left, 5 months later, only 1 person was left. Our boss violated every conceivable (Canadian) work law there was:

1. She hired us as "casual/call-in" employees but scheduled (illegal) each of us for 40 hours a week (illegal.) Because we were "casual" employees we didn't get any of the benefits or pay that a FT employee is entitled to.
2. We still got called in for shifts. By "called-in" I don't mean several hours in advance. I'd get phone calls at 4am asking me to be at work in an hour (illegal.) It took over an hour to get there by bus so it was impossible for me to make it.
3. I got yelled at for not taking call-in shifts (illegal,) even though the contract for a "casual" employee states that the employee can refuse any shift they want, because of the "casual/temporary nature of their employment" and even though I'd already worked 40 hours that week.
4. She promised us all a full-time contract but then never followed through. When asked about it, she'd change the subject or say, "If you need more hours you should probably find another job" which was rude and made no sense; the hours weren't the issue because we were all working full-time hours and being paid minimum wage instead of the $20/hr other full time employees made.
5. I later found out she'd hired several employees that year, all of whom had quit after only a few weeks.
6. My co-worker quit after 3 months, I quit after 5 and the one person who stayed had to file a complaint with HR to get the contract she was promised. The boss now hates her, so I assume she's quit by now.

And that's when I decided to work freelance from home.

The worst boss I ever had threw a phone at me. She missed me, but still it was close enough to feel the wind as it went by. Why you may ask did she do this? Good question because I myself am not positive, but I do know that she would benefit from a psychological evaluation. See she hired me as a showroom assistant/ sales person. My job was to make sure samples came in and out of the showroom and I took and made sales. Some where in the job description I missed the part where I was an electrical engineer/ technical support/ spy/ all around punching bag. On the day the phone flew at me she insisted that I hook up two remote phones to the the main phone. It didn't work which proved to her just how right she was about my stupidity. My error came in suggesting that she may have bought the wrong phones. They set off the beast. I swear she grew 5 feet, fire came out her ears and she began to speak in tongues. That's when she assaulted me with the phone.
To make a long story short she ended up calling the buildings electrician (who I was to pay for) to set up the phone. He told her that she bought the wrong phones for the system and that there was no way that I could have done anything wrong (he waived the fee for me for his visit). I asked for the an apology, which only set her off again. I quit. She understood since it wasn't working for her and she needed someone who understood her level of perfection which I would never meet. Ha!

This isn't the worst story but it still makes me laugh/sigh. One Sunday it was just my boss and I working and he didn't want to hear the football scores on the radio (or any radio station at all) because he was going to watch it later so.. he wouldn't let me turn the radio on ALL DAY! Then about 15 minutes before we closed he went to move his car or something and heard the football score in his car! And he didn't mind! I had to suffer through HOURS of silence only for him to not mind in the end. So lame!
