I worked for a major Canadian university and my boss was a total scam artist. I was hired along with 2 other people and by the time I left, 5 months later, only 1 person was left. Our boss violated every conceivable (Canadian) work law there was:
1. She hired us as "casual/call-in" employees but scheduled (illegal) each of us for 40 hours a week (illegal.) Because we were "casual" employees we didn't get any of the benefits or pay that a FT employee is entitled to.
2. We still got called in for shifts. By "called-in" I don't mean several hours in advance. I'd get phone calls at 4am asking me to be at work in an hour (illegal.) It took over an hour to get there by bus so it was impossible for me to make it.
3. I got yelled at for not taking call-in shifts (illegal,) even though the contract for a "casual" employee states that the employee can refuse any shift they want, because of the "casual/temporary nature of their employment" and even though I'd already worked 40 hours that week.
4. She promised us all a full-time contract but then never followed through. When asked about it, she'd change the subject or say, "If you need more hours you should probably find another job" which was rude and made no sense; the hours weren't the issue because we were all working full-time hours and being paid minimum wage instead of the $20/hr other full time employees made.
5. I later found out she'd hired several employees that year, all of whom had quit after only a few weeks.
6. My co-worker quit after 3 months, I quit after 5 and the one person who stayed had to file a complaint with HR to get the contract she was promised. The boss now hates her, so I assume she's quit by now.
And that's when I decided to work freelance from home.
